Wallingford 8U Team Advances To Championship Game

The Wallingford 8U summer team advanced to the championship game with a thrilling 14-8 victory over a talented Southington team in the semifinals on Thursday night. It was the seventh-straight win for Wallingford, who faced West Hartford in the title game Saturday (Aug. 3) in Glastonbury. Wallingford's run came to an end with an 8-6 loss.

In the semifinals against Southington, Wallingford received key contributions from the entire team in the win. Drew Kofsuske, Dylan Michaels and Luca Palmieri led the way on the mound. Kofsuske struck out five batters in two innings, Michaels struck out three in two innings and Palmieri struck out the side to close out the victory.

Wallingford wasted no time by scoring four runs immediately in the top of the first inning. Michaels, Kofsuske and Palmieri all singled to start the game, Sean Sevigny drew a walk and Luca Marone hit an RBI single to center.

In the second, Jack Piepenbring worked a leadoff walk, Vinny Passmore and Ethan Matteis singled, Grady Bouchard, Ben Kroeber, Michaels and Kofsuske all walked and Palmieri singled to drive in the fifth run of the inning.

The third inning consisted of excellent defense by A.J. Signore at second base and Dom Cirri’s play in left field.

In the top of the fifth, Sevigny blasted a two-out double and scored on Barry O’Brien’s single for a key insurance run. O’Brien stole home on a passed ball for another run.

Palmieri then shut Southington down in the final inning to close out the victory.

The Wallingford 8U players are: AJ Signore, Barry O’Brien, Ben Kroeber, Dominic Cirri, Drew Kofsuske, Dylan Michaels, Ethan Matteis, Grady Bouchard, Jack Piepenbring, Luca Marone, Luca Palmieri, Sean Sevigny and Vinny Passmore.

WLL 12U All-Stars Beat Yalesville; District Title Hopes End

The Wallingford 12-U All-Stars defeated cross-town rival Yalesville 6-5 in a thrilling must-win game on Monday. Unfortunately for Wallingford, the team’s hopes for a chance at a District 5 championship were eliminated the next night when Southington West beat Jack Barry 6-1. Wallingford lost a three-way tiebreaker to Farmington on fewest runs allowed in the tournament.

Dan Vega started for Wallingford in the critical game against Yalesville. The game remained scoreless until the top of the third inning when Jackson Crowell-Masi hit a home run off Vega to give Yalesville a 1-0 lead.

Wallingford responded with two runs in the bottom of the third. Jeter Andrews led off the inning by reaching base, followed by Vince Bibisi and both later scored on a Dan Coratelli single making the score 2-1 after three innings. The score remained that way until the fifth when Yalesville broke through with four runs to take a 5-2 lead.

Wallingford, as it’s done all tournament, responded in the bottom of the fifth by scoring three runs on hits from Bibisi, Kenny Krause, Will Quinn and Robert Crowell and tying the score 5-5 heading into the sixth. Bibisi relieved Vega and shut Yalesville down in the sixth.

With one out in the sixth, Ethan Rich reached base on a walk, advanced to second on a hit by Andrews, took third on a wild pitch, and with two outs, scored on another wild pitch to win the game in dramatic fashion, 6-5.
